Hybrid Clouds are Happening

Recently, I gave a presentation at AWS Cloud Summit in NYC discussing the adoption of hybrid infrastructures. Datapipe has seen tremendous demand for hybrid clouds from our enterprise customers.  These customers want the power and innovation of public cloud, with the assurance of managed services and connectivity to reliable, high-performance database and storage infrastructure. My presentation from the AWS NYC Summit can be found below.

Please note, at the AWS Summit I went through some details that you won’t find in the slideshare deck. I have outlined a number of these highlights below the presentation:

Additional details:

Why Now (Slide 7):

  • Ecosystem
There are providers, we are working together, and we can help you meet your IT goals. Datapipe has excelled in this area.  We have led in integrating public cloud offerings into our mix, while maintaining uncompromising support for our customers
  • Open access network
AWS DirectConnect has opened up a whole new market for hybrid cloud use cases.
  • De facto API Standards
Convergence on S3 and EC2 as the “de facto” API standard has allowed enterprises to build alternative, public cloud friendly storage and compute clouds that can connect/interoperate

Tactical considerations (slide 9)

  • I have “pain” in my datacenter – need to move to cloud, hybrid is easiest/low risk onramp that requires least amount of re-engineering
  • I have “pain” in my cloud – I invested in cloud infrastructure, but now I need a diverse solution with high-performance databases or some other non-cloud friendly option
Strategic considerations:
  • I need to move X% of my infrastructure to cloud (popular corporate mandate these days), hybrid makes this possible
  • I have regulatory requirements as part of my applications, hybrid deployments allow these to connect comfortably to cloud resources while maintaining compliance

PS –  The  ”GET OFF MY LAWN” squirrel  on slide 6 was my way of saying, “Enterprise IT” can no longer tell the cloud adopters to get off their lawn – with hybrid cloud, everyone is happy.

Datapipe and CloudStack

CloudStack is Now Under Apache License

As a global managed service provider, we see a growing demand from our customer base for cloud computing solutions – systems integrators that need infrastructure, ad technology vendors that need platforms, and enterprises that need scalable software solutions.

Datapipe has been managing complex private virtualization solutions on hypervisors like VMware for many years, in addition to public cloud resources from Amazon Web Services (Datapipe’s managed services have been available for AWS since Nov 2010).

Our cloud portfolio is also driving hybrid cloud platforms – our AWS Direct Connect Enabled Service realizes our vision as single provider IT solutions provider and provides a great way for existing AWS customers to grow and expand their footprint into diverse delivery models (i.e. Hybrid big-iron database + public cloud) with the same OPEX economics as public cloud.

As we looked to evolve our virtualization and cloud solutions to respond to the growth of the cloud ecosystem, we chose to leverage Citrix CloudStack, for a number of reasons:

  • CloudStack is designed with AWS-style architecture in mind.  Our customers want AWS compatibility – and so do we.  We leverage AWS infrastructure in our managed cloud services, CDN, and storage.  As a managed service provider, these options give us new ways to provide high-level SLAs to our customers.
  • CloudStack allowed for new hypervisor options to lower cost and provide more value to our customers.  Before CloudStack, we had little choice in hypervisor because of all the mechanics and logistics required to operate at scale, across public and private deployment styles.  We now have a world of new options like KVM and Xen available to our customers.
  • Proven at scale in real production environments. CloudStack has proven itself over competition in actual cloud deployments – the case studies are well known, but their impact in a fast moving market like cloud computing can not be understated.
  • CloudStack is a true open-source platform.  Open platforms are key to our vision for single vendor governance – allowing us capability to “command and control” the architecture in the future. Our customers come to us for turnkey solutions, expecting quick turnaround, full management, and diverse set of options – not a “you only get what’s in the box” solution.

The Citrix’ decision to elevate CloudStack into the Apache Software Foundation, ensures true openness and community governance. We look forward to contributing and participating in the initiative.
